LOCATION
Dartmoor offers some of the most outstanding walking, riding and cycling in the country, with many routes accessible directly from the cottage. Equally the beautiful and dramatic landscape and wide variety of birds and wildlife offer many photographic opportunities for enthusiasts. Manaton rocks, Foxworthy and Hunters Tor are all a short walk away with Haytor, Hound Tor and Widecombe-in-the-Moor within a 10 minute drive. The Dartmoor villages of Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Chagford offer a range of local produce and pubs serving good food. Manaton is ideally placed for discovering a host of dog friendly beaches on the north and south Devon coasts all between 30 mins and 1 hour drive. There are also many family attractions within easy reach so there is plenty to keep everyone amused whatever the weather. See our links to local attractions on our 'Things to do' page.
There are small supermarkets in the towns of Moretonhampstead and Bovey Tracey both about 15 minutes drive from Little Hazelcott or you can arrange a home delivery from one of the major supermarkets for your holiday shopping.
Manaton
Manaton is a picturesque moorland village to the south east of Dartmoor National Park that is a centre for walking and cycling in this part of Dartmoor.
The village is unusual in that it is split into two parts, ½ mile apart. The upper part contains the traditional hub of the village, with its 14th Century Church (St. Winifred’s), the Village Green, the Cricket Field, Village Hall and the sites of the original pub and school. The lower part contains the modern pub – the Kestor Inn – and a variety of housing, both ancient and modern, which grew up around the settlements of Water and Freelands. It is also home to Mellowmead Field - a wild flower meadow and recently planted orchard.
The recommended map is Outdoor Leisure No. 28 – Dartmoor (1:25000).
There are a number of walks of varying lengths ranging from around one hour to a full day.
